The Noble MaoriTawhiao, through chief Paul, has expressed regret that be could not visit Auckland at the present time, owing to his having promised his people to go back from Mercer. He will visit Auckland and the Kaipara district shortly, and gave Paul a handsome Kiwi mat as a pledge of his promise to da so. Architectural. The £SO premium for a design for the new Savings Bank, was awarded to Mr Edward Bartley, architect. Opening Up. The Government are opening up by survey 50,000 acres of fine land in the Kaihu Yalley, Kaipara district. WELLINGTON, August 5. The Brogden Claim. The case of Alexander Brogden, Henry Brogden, and James Brogden, suppliants, against Her Majesty the Queen, respondent, came before Mr Justice Richmond in Chambers to-day. The suppliants appeared to show cause why all proceedings in this action should not be stayed, on the ground mainly that the claims in the petition were disputed within danse 32 of the general conditions of contract set off in the second count, and that such claims ought to bo submitted to arbitration, in the manner directed by the Government Contracts Arbitration Act, 1872. After hearing argument his Honor reserved bis decision. Nautical Inquiry. A preliminary enquiry was held to-day into the stranding of the steamer Wakatu at Patea. The evidence showed that a heavy sea struck the vessel and carried her on to the beach. No blame was attached to anyone. TIMAEU, August 5. New Woollen Factory. A largely attended meeting was held tonight, to discuss the advisability of forming a woollen factory company in Timaru. An influential committee was appointed to report on the whole matter at an early date. Great interest is evinced in the movement. 1 The Use of the Breakwater.
