ASHBURTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
The monthly meeting was held on Tuesday evening, Mr A. Harrison in the chair. [lt was agreed that entries he invited from persons wishing to oompetefor a prizs of not less than £3 3s for the best kept cottage garden, to be tended solely by the owner; the entries, 5s each, to be sent in by Ist October. Mr Sealy read a paper indicating how essential tree planting is with a view to affording shelter from cold and hot winds, especially on open plains. Mr H. 0. Jacobson being on the eve of departure from the district for business reasons, Handed in his resignation of the treasurership, and took occasion to express bis regret at leaving Ashburton. On Mr Poyntz's motion, seoonded by Mr Mayo, the resignation was accepted with regret. On Mr Smith's motion, Mr Mayo was appointed treasurer. During a discussion in regard to prizes for grapes, Mr Smith stated that the grapes shown by Mr B. G. Wright, M.H.8., the year before last, were equal to the best he ever saw in an English hothouse.
