Our Black Brethren. At a meeting, presided over by the Mayor, a resolution was carried to invite Tawhiao and hia followers, 450, to Auckland. Subscriptions are freely ooming in to defray the cost. A Scandal. At a meeting of the Presbytery it was announced that the chargea publicly made against a student would be thoroughly gifted. The session in St. David's has made enquiry and passed the case on to the Presbytery. The Mail Steamer. The agent of the mail steamer has received a cablegram that the City of New York left San Francisco on Sunday, 31st ult. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 3. Progress of Breakwater. The work at the harbor works is now proceeding rapidly. Another forty-two ton bloofe was placed yesterday, making six blocks laid within a fortnight. At the end of the breakwater at high tide there is from 10ft to 12ft WELLINGTON, August S. Railway Accident. An accident occurred on the WellingtonMasterton railway this evening. The +-nin had reached a point one mile this sf Kaitobi when, through some una-: alr-'la cause, four timber waggons ran oi* iine and were thrown over the embankment. Fortunately the coupling gave way, and the only damage done was to the step of one of the carriages. DDNEDIN, August 3. Mercantile ProgressThe Chamber of Commerce have forwarded a telegram as follows to Government:— "Warehousemen represent to the Chamber the serious loss from requiring to bond calicoes, sheeting, &). Cannot the Government allow them to pass sight entries, depositing the present duty pending consideration of the tariff ?" Progress. Tne New Zealand end Australian Laud Company intend starting a dairy factory on the Amerioan system on one of their properties.
