In tho House of Commons the attention of the Government was culled to the Solomon I-lands massacres, and of the steps taken by Commodore Wilson for tho punishment of the natives. Messrs Richard and Gorst qaes'ioned the Government on the subject, and expressed tho opinion that but little good could accrue from retaliatory measures such as were adopted on tho cruise of tho Emerald, when the huts and plantations of the natives wore indiscriminately destroyed. Tho Secretary to the Admiralty replied, justifying the course pursued, and declaring that tho repeated massacres committed by tho savage natives in these islands rendered some punitive measures absolutely necessary. Arrangements have boon concluded for a visit of a professional team of cricketers to Australia during the coming season. The hitch caused by obj-otions raised by tho Nottingham cricketers has been overcome, they having yielded tho point, and signified their willingness to join tho team. July 21. Hostilities have broken out among the Indian tribes in British Columbia, who are fighting desperately with one another. Intel-1-gence has been received of a fierce battle which has taken place between the opposing parties. The encounter lasted n long time, and eighty Indians were killed, besides a largo number wounded. The presentation of the prizes won at the meeting of the National R fie itsjooaition at Wimbleton, took place to day. Tho meeting was declared to hove been a thorough success, high average merit having been obtained by marksmen. Owing to tho persistency of juries acquitting all prisoners charged with agrarian Crimea and outrages, tho Judges have adjourned the Assizes which were being held at Cork. An agitation has been started in Ireland, with the object of making a special appeal to Mr Gladstone to discharge all psraons who have been arrested on suspicion, as soon as the Land Bill hue finally passed. Tho annual meeting of the Cobden Club has been held, at which several prominent public men and political economists wore present. A number of speeches wore delivered, in which reference was made to the growth of protective principles, which was deplored by most of those present. July 23.
Political affairs in Portugal are in a very unsatisfactory state, and great disaffection toward the Government prevails. The Government at Lisbon, thinking that Republican tumults would ensue, has decided to abandon the military review that had been projected. A destructive outbreak of yellow fever has occurred at Havanah, Island of Cuba, causing great mortality among the inhabitants. A serious fire has broken out in a large wine warehouse at Bordeaux. No less than 8000 casks of wine have been totally destroyed. The Government have now under consideration a recommendation made to her Majesty on the subject of granting honors in connection with the Melbourne Exhibition. It is believed that announcements will very shortly be published.
