Considerable excitement prevailed in Melbourne yesternight pending the receipt of the latest electoral returns. Large crowds assembled opposite the newspaper offices, where the results wore posted Sir Bryan O’Loghlen’s majority amounts to 91, whereas Mr Gaunson was defeated by 203. On all aides great satisfaction is expressed at the defeat of the Minister of Lands. It is expected that Parliament will now finish the labors of the session, then go into a short recess to enable the Ministers to formulate measures. It is understood that Mr J P. Casey will oppois Mr Eobertson, the Constitutional candidate at Polworth. The Government propose closing the session, and commencing a new session on 3rd August, when the Minister of Bailways, by public advertisement, will withdraw all official circulars or memos, of a political character previously isused. Mr Cosmo Newbory, tho Government analyst, has reported upon the properties of the paraffin of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company, and that it contains 3 per cent of water, 24 of clay, and 73 of paraffin and oils. Judging from the trials, he estimates the oils at 10 per cent, but has not yet had time to separate them. It is estimated that the wax, after cleansing, will be worth £2B per ton. The Governments of "Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia have requested Sir Joseph Hooker to select a scientific man to represent the colonies at the approaching Phylloxera Naatatrix Congress at Bordeaux, and that tho report by Baron Muller on tho vino disease in Victoria bo considered at ti e Congress. An application for a patent, on behalf of John Bison, for a new method of manufacturing ges has been granted by the SolicitorGeneral. The gas was manufactured under a new process before Mr Dobson granted the patent. Shares have since risen considerably in this market.
The Eoyal Princes remain almost exclusively aboard the Inconstant. Latest New Britain news states that tho natives made a hostile manifestation against tbe white inhabitants on the island, and the latter, believing their lives endangered, attacked the islanders, killing about fifty. No whites wore killed. H.M.S. Conflict appeared on the scene, and hanged three natives for the murder of o white man.
