PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.

[By Tblbgbaph.] [PBOII THE OWN CORRESPONDENT OP THE “PEESS.”] WELLINGTON, July 20. The Public Petitions Committee reported to-day on petitions (1) of tho Church of England General Synod in favor of Bible reading in schools, and (2) of the Dunedin Freothought Association in favor of continning the exclusion of the Scriptures. In each case the committee reported that as the subject was one of public policy they declined to make any recommendation in general to the prayer of the petitioners. A statement of the sinking fund account by the Controller General was laid on the table to-day, but as it has been anticipated by tables appended to tbe budget it is needless to repeat tbe figures. Mr Weston’s Offences Against the Person Bill provides—(l) That consent of young persons under thirteen shall be no defence to a charge for indecent assault; (2) prescribes whipping for wife beating.
