At a meeting of shareholders in the Coffee Palace Company, it was decided to purchase a site on the Harbor reclamation, opposite the Waitemata Hotel. The H.A.C. Society. At the (half-yearly meeting of the H.A.O. Benefit Society, Mr Penning was elected president. The funds amount now to £I7OO. Coal ExplorationApplications from prospectors to prospect for coal in Tararua and Coromandel were granted by the Waste Lands Board. On the Alert> A meeting of Licensed Victuallers re the Lioensing Bill was held to-day. It is understood that a delegate was appointed, but the treasurer declined to sign a cheque on account of the expenses till the affairs of the society are placed on a proper basis. The Unfortunate Travellers. Dr. Philson inspected the quarantine station to-day. AU those in quarantine are in good health, and ample supplies of fresh provisions hare been furnished by the Mail Company's agent. WELLINGTON, June 23. A Lawyer in Contempt. At the Supremo Court in banco to-day Mr Chapman, solicitor, appeared in support of a rule in re 0. E. Madden, solicitor, of Marton, which was argued at the sitting of the Court some time ago. On that occasion a rule nisi was obtained by the Wellington Law Society, calling upon Mr Madden to show cause why he should not be adjudged guilty of contempt for having practised as a solicitor at Marton without taking out the necessary certificates, and the matter was allowed to stand over till to-day to enable him to make an explanation. Mr Gully appeared on his behalf, when failing to show the required cause, Mr Madden was adjudged guilty of contempt and fined the full penalty of £SO and costs. NELSON, June 23. Sporting. A match between Mr J. Bolton's Halfcaste and Mr B. Blower's Septimus was run at Waka to-day for £IOO aside. Tho distance was two miles, and the weights the same as at the last meeting. A great deal of interest was taken in the event. Septimus won by half a head. Besides the stakes £IOOO changed hands on it. DUNEDIN, June 23. The Unemployed Again! A number of unemployed waited on the Government Engineer to'day seeking employment. They represented that 200 men were in Dunedin willing to work, but unable to get it. Promotion. Mr Harvey, clerk of the Court at Naseby, has been appointed Deputy-Registrar of the Supreme Court here. Envious. The Volunteers here are dissatisfied at the Garrison Hall being let for other than Volunteer purposes, and talk of referring the matter to the Government. Property Sale. Mr Henry Driver has bought the Clarendon estate, Waihola, from Mr Clark, of Victoria, paying £lO per acre, or a total of £20,000. The Jewellery Thieves. Anderson and Hughes were committed for trial for the robbery of jewellery at Christchurch. land Speculating. The New Zealand Agricultural Company, during the past sir months, have sold over 12,000 acres, at an average of over £lO per acre, and 123 town sections, at an average of over £36 each.
