A few persons were summoned this morning in the SI. Court for the property tax, when judgment was given in every case. One case was defended by Mr Liewthwaite, who sent in a return for all land claimed by him, representing a total of £6230. That amount included sections 46 and 52, block 7, on the Waimate Plains. He said those sections had been illegally taken possession of by the Government, and sold without his consent. He objected to pay the property tax because the land was not in his possession, and secondly, the persons at present in occupation had paid the tax. He said he put those sections in his return because he intended to claim them from the Government. The magistrate gave judgment for the amount claimed, which Liewthwaite said he would settle by giving a cheque on the Government for it. NAPIER, May 16. InsuranceThe Associated Insurance Companies intend to sue the Union Company for the values insured on the cargo lost through the Boojum in the Sir Donald collision. The companies cannot sue in their own name, but will pay the insurance to (be consignees, taking authority to sue in tie names of the consignees. Sporting MemThe Jockey Club committee to-night agreed to offer the Porbury Park Company £IOOO a year for a ton years’ lease of the present course there, and requested an answer by Friday. The Club have two other courses under offer. They also considered the case of J. Harding, who entered Miss Domett for the February Meeting, forwarding a cheque for the fees. The cheque was dishonoured, and has not since been paid, and the committee passed a resolution in accordance with Rule 37 of the Club and Rule 29 of the English Jockey Club, declaring Harding a defaulter until the cheque be paid.
