KAIAPOI REGATTA.

Commodore, Dr. Dudley; Judge, Mr Eckersleys Starter, Mr G. F. Day; Committee, Messr. J. H. Moore, A. T Clark, W. R. May, A, Piper, J. Dippenheim, A. C. Fountaine; M. C. Moran', Isaac Wilson, J. H. Evans, H. J. Roll, J. Wenterhouse, W. Frazer, J. Pearce, G. H. Blockwel), C. Smith, and J. Perrin; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr C. E. Dudley. The fourteenth annual regatta was held on Thursday, and might have been one- of the most ■ successful but for the gusty nature of' the weather, and an unfortunate freshet, whioh affected a portion of the river below the town. The gale drove clouds of dust over the spectators, and made it very hard pulling against the stream. To a certain extent the dust nuisance was quelled by the Mayor ordering out the steam fire engine, and with three jets the approaches of the swing bridge, on whioh was nearly all the traffic, were rendered comfortable to walk on.

A general holiday was kept, and a grand display of bunting made. The looal brass band played lively selections from a sheltered stand point. As usual, the banks on both sides of the river were well covered with holiday makers and patrons of the art of rowing. The' head quarters of the committee were on the wharf usually selected, where it was pleasing to onoe more meet the cheerful commodore, the independent judge, and the übiquitous secretary. On the vacant ground near the winning post were encamped those who had "smallgames" and the refreshment booths. The committee from time to time were called into conference in the borough council chamber. At the first meeting at noon it was determined to postpone the Sailing race till noon on Saturday week, and get off the Junior Pair-oar and Junior Sculling races, over a course from the Cam Junction to Look's Point, there turning flags and winning on passing the stand for the seoond time. This arrangement gave the publio every opportunity to witness the whole of three raoes. At the next meeting the committee determined to leave the captains of the Champion Fours to decide whether they would row that race, and after inspecting the river they deoided to essay the race. The particulars of the raoing is appended. It will be seen that the Cam crew of the Cure Club was victorious in the Champion race. This is the fourth season in succession in whioh this boat has won on this river; and in the last eleven years the crew, out of an average of three regattas a year, viz., at Lyttelten, Heathoote, and Kaiapoi, have only lost four races. They may now be fairly dubbed " The Invinoibles."

Junior Pairs (under 21 years). One mile. Open to members of clubs. First prize, £4; second, .£l. Cure (Cure Club) —A. Winterbourne, stroke; C. Wright; F. Day (cox.) 1 Isis (Canterbury Club) J. G. Grieraon, stroke; DobBon; (cox) 2 A good start was effected, the Cure leading and holding its position to the finish, winning by a length. Junior Double Sculls, in stump outriggers. Open to all comers. One mile. First prize, JE3 ; second, £\. No name (Union Club)— F. Fuller, stroke; J. Gilmo'ur : W. H. Dunnage (cox) ... 1 Kea (Canterbury Club)—J. G. Grierson, stroke; Dobson; J. Laurie (cox) 2 Mako Mako (Cure Club) H. Hayman, stroke; J. Smith; H. Mathews (cox) ... 0 The Union pair went away with the lead, and being apparently the lightest boat held the place with ease. The Mako Mako, a very heavy craft compared to the others, however, kept the pace warm for the Sea. The Union crew won with lOseo to spare, and about 4aee elapsed between the arrival of the Kea and Mako Mako. Senior Double Sculls, in stump outriggers. Open to all comers. Two milea. First prize, £5 ; second, £2. No name (Union Club)—J. T. Smith, stroke; C. Bogers; C. J. Styche (cox) 1 Mako Mako (Cure Club) —J. Perrin, stroke ; B. Day; A. Mathews (cox) 2 Kea (Canterbury Club) —L. M. Ollivier, stroke; J.,0. Jones; J. Fletcher (cox) ... 0 The start and course was in favor of the Union crew, whioh was never passed. The Mako Mako, whioh was in the tail of the race to nearly the finish, made a grand spurt and got in second by a short nose. The winning crew had about three lengths in hand. Senior Pairs. Open to all comers. Two miles. First prize, £6 ; second, £2. Iris (Canterbury Club)—L. M. Olliver, stroke ; J. O. Jones, J. Fletcher (cox) .... 1 Cure (Cure Club)—J. Winterbourne, sstroke; G. Wright, F. Day (cox) ... ... ... 2 The Cure came away from the start to the turning po'nt, with two lengths in hand, and evidently the crew rowed easily ; but after pauing the turn the superior style of the Iris or«w brought that boat away in half-lengths at a time. The Cure was widely steered, and taken into the wind and tide. This race was won by about a length and a half. Four oafted Sweepsstake Bace of £1 each boat, with JES added. Two miles upstream. Open to all members of clubs not in the senior fours. Cam (Cure Club)—C. Wright, stroke; H. Hayman, A. Winterbourne, F. Smith, F. Day (cox) , —, "• * Union (Union Club)—F. Fuller, stroke; F. lowley. Three miles up stream. Open to all clubs in the colony. First prize. .£2O; second, £5. Cam (Care Olub)—J. Winterbourne, stroke; J. Perrin, B. Day, G. Wright, F. Day (cox) * Illyssus (rantorbury Club)—J. G. Grierson, stroke; L M.Ollivier, Bolton, Dobson, J. Laurie (cox) • , a The water was as well as could be exr>ccted, and almost without current, as the tide kept the tnth down. The half-hour's rain had also ceased. The boats wart off on even terms from Mr Day's, boat. The lUyasufl

drew away for the first quarter of a mile, when the Gamrider* came on, and after a alight shook of the Cam bows against the Illyssua rodder, which did not materially affect the race, the Cure crew began to pile it on. They came away then with a steady stroke of 48. ©rierson pat bis crew on their metal in the effort to rtach their rivals, but the Cam gradually drew ahead till the distance in ad vanoe at; the finieh was only covered by the IHyssus in Mseos aftar. Between the boat raoes a Swimming Race for men, for 20s, resulted in favor of B. H, Stranghman, J. W. Preece second. For boya, in favor of F. Weston (first, 11. Allprest seoond. The Duck Hunt resnlted in the capture of the drake, J. Moffatt, by the duok, F. Weston, within the time allowed. This caused a considerable amount of fun. The Junior Four-oar Baoa did not take place, the Illyssus (Canterbury) was scratched, and the Union orew met with a capsize near the landing stage when putting off.
