The annual race meeting at New Brighton was held yesterday, upwards of 400 persons being present. Mr Hayward, the Sumner bus proprietor, ran a conveyance to and from the course, and was well patronised. The resources of the New Brighten Hotel were taxed to the utmost, luncheon being laid in the large dining room, and also in the assembly room attached to the hotel, whioh were filled from time to time by hungry pleasure seekers. Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin were on the ground with the totalisator, which was fairly patronised. The only drawback to the perfect enjoyment of the day was the nor'-wester, which blew clouds of sand from time to time into the ears and eyes of all present in a most disagreeable manner. Appended are the results:— Maiden Plate of 10 sovs, confined to the Avon district; weight for age; one mile. Mr Mcßratney's Starlight ... (Aynslej) 1 Mr Brown's Illma (Stewart) 2 Mr Morgan's Winfield (Duncan) 3 Mr Walker's Claret was soratched. A good start was effected. Illma led till near the post, when, as she could not stay, Starlight oame away, and won easily by six lengths, Winfield being nowhere. -* ■ Tbottinq Bace, Handicap, of 10 sovs; no weight under 11 stone ; two miles. Mr Muir's Dick, 345 yards ... (Owner) 1 Mr P. Stewart's Zulu, 100 yards ... (Owner) 2 Mr Tarrans' Billy, 200 yards ... (Owner) 3 The following also ran :—Mr Sunderland s Doctor's Maid, scratch; Mr Morling's Deception, 70 yards,- Mr Kerr's Magic, 130 yards ; Mr Williams' Polly, 300 yards ; Mr Hamilton's Major, 50 yards. Dick led from start to finish, and won by fifty yards, a distance of twenty yards dividing Zulu and Billy. Dootor's Maid was pulled up about 100 yards from the post. The totalisator contained £62, there being eight ohances on Dick. Nbw Bbighton Cup of 15 sovs, confined to the Avon district; all horses to carry 12st; distance, two and a half miles. Mr Boberts's Fairplay (Aynsley) 1 Mr Ellis's Darkie (Hodges) 2 Mr Morgan's Tbilo (Duncan) 3 Claret was scratched. This race was never in doubt, Fairplay having it all his own way from first to last, and winning in a canter, six lengths ahead of Darkie, who was ten lengths in advance of Thilo. also ran. ' ~ After the raoa a protest was lodged by the owner of Foretop, on the ground that Titmouse was more than fourteen hands high. The protest being allowed, the stakes went to the owner of the second horse. The Hack Race was won by Mr Ford's Paddy ; MrOgdon's Zoe being a good second. Seven horses started. The Oonoolation Stake was appropriated by Mr Ellis' Darkie, beating two others. The stewards are to be congratulated on the very complete arrangements for the day'i) sports. OXFORD ANNUAL RACES. Levant and Mountain Deer were scratched. Rifleman made the running for a mile and a half, when Young Diomedes came, and, drawing away, won easily by two lengths. District Hurdle Back Handicap, 15 sova, with a swoepsttke of 1 sov for acceptors, to go to the second horse. Distance 1$ miles, over six flights of hurdles. Mr E. Young Diomedes made play almost from the fall of the flag, and the other two refusing, he won easily. The lot got well away, and after half the distance had been covered. Fugitive, who had been carefully ridden by Webster, went to the front, and coming away, won easily hard held. Oxford Cup Handicap (open), 30 sovs. with a sweepstake of 2 sovs for acceptors, to go to the second horse. Distance, 2 miles. Mr Derrett's b g Don Juan, by Brush, aged, 6at 101 b (Mitchell) 1 Mr S. The lot got well away and ran together to the back of the course, where Don Juan went to the front, made all the rest of the running, and won easily in a cantor from Fugitive, who, in her turn, beat Farewell a length for second place. I The Hack Race produced a field of ten, and was won by Mr Aekey's Little Maid. Consolation Handicap of 10'bovb; for all horses b:aten, but not _ distanced, during the meeting. The third of these annual meetings came off yesterday in a paddock, kindly lent for the occasion by Mr D. Oebbie. The weather was everything that could be desired, the attendance good, and the stewards did all in their power to assist the indefatigable seoretary, Mr Orton Bradley, in making the meeting i» success. The various events were well contested, and Mr Danoe, as the caterer, earned .golden .opinions from his numerous clients. Mr Ferguson officiated as judge, Mr Pimm as starter, and Mr McOormiok as clerk of the course. The result of the day's sport was as follows: — County Handicap Hurdles, of 10 sovs; li miles. Atlantic had shot his bolt half a mile from home, and Talent, who tried hard, oould not keep on terms with the winner. Time, 3min 39£seo. London Handicap. Little Lady colt 1 Sultana 2 Little John 3 St.* Patrick's Handicap. Luna Bst 81b 1 Nautilus 7st9lb 2 Mokuraka, Sat 71b 3 Nautilus went off- with a strong lead, but shut up as soon as she was collared by Luna, and lost the race by half a length. The Selling Stakes were won by Emerald.
NAPIER J.O. BACES. [PBBSB ASSOCIATION TKLIICHJAM.J NAPIER, March 17. The Jookey Club's meeting, whioh commenced to-day, was the moat successful ever held in Hawke's Buy. There was a large assemblage of spectators, while the course, although rather hard for want of rain, was otherwise in splendid condition. Maiden Plate of 60 sovs; 1£ miles. Primrose, Bat ... ... ... ... ... 3 Mies Domett also started. Badsworth nnd Woodpecker were scratched. Miss Domett was loft at the post, the jockey afterwards explaining that he understood it was no start. This threw her out of the' raoe, though she endeavoured to catch the others us soon as the jockey saw his mistake. On coming into the straight, Grand Duchess ran to the front and won easily. Napibb Handicap of 500 bovs ; one and three-qnarter mileß.

There was great difficulty in getting the horses off, owing to the fractiousness of Btndwiok. My Dream was first away, but after a few strides the running was taken up by Mosmatiri, who came on in front to the Stand, when he gave way to Danebury, who was followed by Foul Play, My Dream, On Dit, Bandwiok, and Mavis in the order named, Miss Domett, who got badly off, being a long way in the rear. At the back of the course My Dream ran inside a post, and wss not persevered with. No change of any moment, ooourred until half-a-mile from home, where Foul Play was in difficulties, and at tbe railway turn Bandwiok began to draw up to the leaders. Ooming into the straight Danebury still led, the rest, with the exception of Miss Domett and My Dream, being all in a cluster. Shortly after Danebury dropped bask beaten, followed in a few strides further by Moanatiri. Inside the distanoe Budings took Bandwiok to the front, and although Dan made a determined effort to ovarhaul him it was without avail, the son of Barbarian and Gipsy Girl, with a little in hand, passing the post a length and a half in front of the Wanganui hack, On Dit half a length away third, Danebury fourth, My Dream fifth, the rest, with the exception of Miss Domett, close up. Time, 3min. lOjec, wbioh is very fast. Corinthian Cup, of 50 sova ; two miles. Welterweights forage.
