[By Tklkgkaph.J [Per s.s. Bingarooma at the Bluff.] MELBOURNE, March 1. Ah acrimonious discussion took place in the House on Thursday, Mr Patterson accusing Mr Woods of puffing his brake. Mr Woods retorted that Mr Patterson was speaking untruthfully. Dr. Heart, in a speech on the University Bill, said he intended to move several amendments in committeo. He objected to the proposal that three members of the Council should be nominated by tho Government. He was also opposed to ladies becoming members of the Senato or Council. Mr Casey announces himself a candidate for Maldoti. He addressed tho electors yesterday. The Victorian Alliance Society, on tho basis of the United Kingdom Alliance, has been founded in Melbourne. The vital statistics of Melbourne for January are :—Population, 270,000; births, 716 ; deaths, 444. SYDNEY, March 1. Tho Minister of Mines has reoeived a telegram reporting a great rush to Mount Brown, whioh is expected to prove a large goldfield. The stone struck in the Reform mine, Luoknow, is estimated to yield 500 ounoos per ton. Several New Caledonian escapees have been arrested as vagrants, and remanded for extradition. They were subsequently sentenced to six months' imprisonment. In the libel case against the " Bulletin," the plaintiff proved the absolute falseness of the insinuation against him. The jury retired for half an hour, and on returning awarded £IOOO damages. The Chief Justice summed up strongly against the " Bulletin." ADELAIDK, March 1. The Government has undertaken to pay the whole expense of the fine art exhibition, to be held at the close of the Melbourne exhibition. HOBART, Maroh 1. The " Meroury" states that Governor Strachan has returned from the Cape to England, and is not expected in Tasmania before July. BRISBANE, March 1. One hundred and fifty tons of quartz, from the Crown Claim, Gympie, yielded 21910 z of gold. Messrs Mclntyro and Hurst have been selected aa candidates for the vuoancy of Maldon.
