At the sittings of the Assembly yesterday the principal business was the discussion of the Address in reply to the Governor's speech. The address was moved by Mr W. H. Piggot, and seconded by Mr J. H. Douglas. Mr Famuli spoke next, after which Mr Buchanan moved an amendment by way of an addition to the address, affirming the principal of protection. The debate was continued by Messrs Brodribb, Melville, Turner, and Webb. Mr Buchanan's amendment was negatived, and the original motion agreed to without a division in either case. NEWCASTLE, December 17.
The announcement of a great rise in tbo price of coal in California has created considerable excitement here. It is confidently believed that coal will be down below 7a 6i at Newcastle after the new year, when extreme competition is expected. TEMORA, December 17.

In the Assembly on Wednesday there was a long discussion over the Governor's salary and the incidental item of £7OO for gas and water for Government House, wa3 debated yesterday, It was ultimately carried on the understanding that it was not to appear on the estimates again. The " Argus " and "Age "of Wednesday state that tho small majority obtained by the Government on Mr Smith's want of confidence motion serves to show their weakness, and that they will be unable to do more than merely transact business. ADELAIDE, December 27. Parliament meets on the 4th of January for a short session, during which measures will be passed to validate the proceedings cf the recent Conference.
BRISBANE, December 27. The body of Patrick Reynold, alius Ben
Donnelly, who attempted to murder Mist Tilley, at Versdale, was found in a water hole a mile from the scene of the outrage. Near the body a bottle labelled poison waft found, and a pistol. Miss Tilley is able to sit and sign her depositions. Sbe will pro* bably recover, notwithstanding her wounds.
