[By Tbleobaph.] [Per s.s. Hero, at Auckland.] LONDON, December 14. Herbert, who went home from Melbourne to receive a legacy, and murdered his wife's sister, has been hanged. Boyd of Newcastle has challenged Hanlan in the terms of the championship race to row a match for £2OO a-side. Hanlan has accepted, and proposes that the race shall take place at the end of January. Boyd's wish is to meet him six weeks later. The time is at present unfixed, also whether it will take place on the Thames or Tyne. December 16. The Protestant church at Ballenahinch has been forcibly entered and completely wrecked. Battalions of Scots Guards and of the Bifle Brigade are ordered to Ireland. All army furloughs are cancelled in that portion of the kingdom. An assassin attempted to murder M. Brataino, the Prime Minister of Boumania. • The attack resulted in the intended victim being slightly wounded and his assailant arrested. The proposed new line sf mail steamers for Australia, under the auspices of the French Government, will be ready in two years. At first the service will be monthly and then fortnightly.
