The police have ascertained that Brown, the shipping clerk on the wharf, who died suddenly on Saturday from supposed excessive drinking, purchased poison from King, the chemist. Charge of Incendiarism. Eiohard James Owen, charged with wilfully setting fire to a building house, has been further remanded. DUNEDIN, November 29. A Desperate RuffianAt Clyde on Friday a man named Ballan* tyne was charged with indecency before a girl aged ten, and the Bench sentenced him to six months in Dunedin Gaol. As the prisoner was being removed, he wrested himself from the attendant constable and seized the girl, saying—“ I have been punished innocently, and will now do something to be punished for.” It took five men to rescue the child from his clutches. He received an additional six months for the assault. The child is not much hurt. The Australian Eleven. Arrangements are completed for the Australians trip, as under :—To commence about January 11th with a two days’ match at Invercargill; three days at Dunedin; one day at Oamarn; one day at Timaru; three days at Christchurch; three at Wellington; two at Napier; three at Auckland ; and, if time permits, two at Wanganui. The teams stay in New Zealand will extend over five weeks. AUCKLAND, November 27. H-lff-S. DanaeH.M.S. Danae sails for Sydney, thence for England, her commission having expired. The M.H.B. and His Pig. The dispute between Mr Hurst and the Pastoral Association re the lamp-blacked Bertie Saverna pig at the late show, has been satisfactorily settled, the Association having passed a resolution that the disqualification took place simply as a mark of their disapproval of using any coloring matter in dressing an animal for exhibition. No blame is attached to Mr Hurst for attempting to deceive the judges, but the committee are determined that animals shall be shown on their merits. An affidavit was made by one of Mr Hurst’s employes stating that while Mr Horst was in Wellington, at the Exhibition of 1879, the two pigs there shown were similarly dressed without the knowledge of their owner. An Undesirable ForemanAn inquest was held into the fire at Mount Eden road, in which Mr W. Edwards’ house was burned down, and for which Edward Jamieson is in custody on a charge of incendiarism. When the inquest was nearly finished it was discovered that the foreman of the jury was the local agent of the New Zealand Insurance Company, in which the burnt buildings were insured for £250. It is expected that the proceedings will have to be gone over again, and the inquest was adjourned till Monday. GBAHAMBTOWN, November 27. The To Aroba Goldfield. Intelligence from Te Aroha is to the effect that the township is deserted, as the men are
all out prospecting the range*. There are» number of applications to the warden for prospecting areas, and claims are being rapidly taken up. The feeling is in favor of the district, and the men seem satisfied with their prospects. Scrip shares in the prospectors’ claim are at a premium of Is 6d. Other companies are being formed. The claims to disputed ground will be amalgamated. A. public meeting is to be called to urge the Government to make the road through to Eomata, or to send a detachment of the Armed Constabulary to protect the workmen of the County Council. A demand has been made for a telegraph station at Te Aroha. NELSON, November 27. A Vacant Seat. A requisition is in course of signature asking Mr Arthur Collins to become a candidate for the vacant seat for Nelson suburbs. Mr Alfred Harley, of Stoke, states he will be a candidate also. WELLINGTON. November 27. Charge of Smuggling. The charge of smuggling against the captain and steward of the ship Wairoa was resumed to-day. His Worship reserved Judgment. Shock of Earthquake. A slight shock of earthquake was felt hereat twelve minutes past one this afternoon. November 28. Cole’s CircusCole’s Circus Company arrived this afternoon from Auckland. An immense crowd was attracted to the|wharf. TIM ASTI, November 28. The Weather. Very heavy rain has been falling all day and will do a great deal of good to the crops. OAM ABU, November 28 It is now raining steadily, and its value to the district cannot be over-estimated. DUNEDIN, November 27. Agricultural Show. The number of entries for the show on Friday and Saturday is seventy in excess of last year. The class of stock will be exceptionally good, all the principal breeders in Canterbury and Otago competing. There are 143 entries of long wool sheep and 148 in dairy produce, while all other classes are well filled up. Mining. The Cromwell Company has crushed 3430 z. of retorted gold from 405 tons of stuff. [from oub own cobees pond bitx -1 WELLINGTON, November 27. Property Assessment Act.
