A FALSE ALARM.
An amusing accident occurred at Madrid a few days before the birth of the Boyal Princess, whioh took placs on September 12th:—At six o'clock in the morning the loud report of artillery suddenly startled the sleeping city. Hundreds of people hurried from their beds and into the .streets, and a steady stream set in towards the palaoe. More than one exalted functionary, it is said, anxiously awaited, already clad in gala costume, the official summons to| the palaoe. The guns were eagerly counted—ten, twelve, fifteen. " A Princess!" cried everyone, for strangely enough, after the fifteenth report there was a temporary cessation of the firing ; then number sixteen boomed. "No-s Prince!" shouted the eager orowd. But after twenty-five reports had sounded and the firing still continued, peonle began to look at each other and to wonder. The ominous word " Gemelos " began to be whispered. Gradually the truth dawned upon the enthusiastic expectants as the report spread that a battery of artillery had early that morning gone out to the Compamonto to practice blank firing.
