THE MAYORALTY OF CHRISTCHURCH.

In view of the election of a " new man " to fill the mayoral chair, councillor! indulged in a little neat chaff last evening, the chaff being sweetened with a sensation of complimentary syrup. It having been decided to hold the meetings once a fortnight instead of once a week, Councillor Hulbert slily remarked that one serious drawback —the only one hie fertile imagination could oonoeive—was the deprivation councillors would suffer in losing so much of the brilliant oratory they might expeot to fall from the lips of their new chairman in golden showers; whereat Councillor Gapes looked sweetly with a modest dignity suitable to the occasion ; the other candidate would no doubt have taken the implied compliment (or whatever _it was intended to be) in a similarly becoming manner, had ho been present, but he wasn't. His Worship the Mayor casually remarked that he could have better appreciated the intended change had it been decided on at an earlier stage in his career, so that he might have experienced its advantages. A kind of playful wail, this, whioh elicited the soothing assurance that no consideration on earth could have indnoed the Council to lose one fleeting moment of his sweet society had he consented longer to grace the Council Board by his Eresenee. Thus, after the manner of a ighly cultivated mutual admiration society, were the members of this little assembly a happy family in exceeding good humor with one another.
