Farkes will not stand for Canterbury, his present electorate, but will probably try East Sydney again. MELBODBNE, November 4. A special meeting of the Executive on the 3rd inst. considered Kelly's sentence. Mr Gaunson interviewed Mr Barry to protest against all haste. He stated he had arranged a public meeting for the following Friday, to petition =for a commutation. Mr Berry refused to alter arrangements. Mr Gaunson then interviewed the Governor with the same result. Judge Barry attended the Council, which resolved to carry out the sentence on the J lth. In the Assembly, on Wednesday, Sir B. O'Loughliri moved a resolution that the reduction in the Civil Service salaries was inconsistent with the Civil Service Act, and ought to be struck out of - the estimates. Mr Berry made a vigorous speech, Baying it was an attempt to oppose retrenchment. The motion, was, however, carried by 27 to 23. This constitutes a comparatively thin House, only fifty out of eighty members being present. A member of the ring lost £IO,OOO over Grand Flaneur viotory for the Cup. ADELAIDE, November 4. The navvies on the Valletterowie railway have struck for 61 advance on the wages of 7s 61 which they are receiving, without any reduction in hours. The Government are determined not to yield. The men are being paid off, and the work is being stopped. Boberts and his party of well sinkers, at Erew's Ironstone Ponds, in the Northern territory, were attacked by a large number of natives towards midnight of September 7th. The barking of their dog saved them. The natives were crawling up to their hammocks. BRISBANE, November 4. The Assembly, after a protracted discussion,, adopted the plans and sections proposed for the new railway from Brisbane to Sandgate, also from Oxley to South Brisbane and the Burumu railway. A Chinese gardener drew the second prize of £IOOO in the sweep for the Melbourne Cup.
