THE IMPORTATION OF PLAYING CARDS.
His Excellency the Administrator of the Government has appointed Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, as ports for the importation of playing cards. The provisions relating to playing cards in the Customs Tariff Act, 1880, are as follows : “ Every pack of playing cards imported_ or cleared from any warehouse after the passing of this Act shall be stamped or marked in sucii manner as the Commissioner of Customs may direct. Any person who sells, uses, or has possession of any pack of cards so imported and cleared, and not so stamped or marked, shall forfeit a sum not exceeding £30.” For the purpose of carrying out those provisions, stamps for stamping playing cards have been provided at the ports above mentioned, and the Collectors of Customs at those ports have been instructed to stamp any dutypaid stocks of cards which may be sent to them by dealers or others from any part of the colony within a reasonable time after the date of this notification.
