ODDEFELLOWSHIP.
A meeting was held in the schoolroom at Halswell on Tuesday evening, October .12, for the purpose of taking into consideration the question of starting a branch lodge o£ the American Order of Oddfellows in that district. A number of the members of the Avon Lodge were in attendance, having driven out specially for the purpose. Mr Foster, the schoolmaster, was voted to the chair, and after referring to the object of the meeting, called upon Mr Lezard, N.G. of the Avon Lodge, to explain soma of the principles and objects of the Order he represented, and that gentleman having responded to the invitation by clearly and concisely stating the many advantages and high principles of American Oddfellowahip, which is rapidly increasing in strength and importance in this and the neighboring colonies, the meeting unanimously carried a resolution to the effect that a lodge be established at Halswell as soon as possible. A petition to the Grand Lodge in Australia to grant the necessary charter was immediately prepared, and a collection being made in the room a sum of £5 was at once subscribed to defray the necessary expenses. Votes of thanks' were then passed to Mr Lezard and the chairman and the meeting dispersed.
