THE PAST RACING SEASON.
Tho following statistics for the year 187980, are extracted from the annual compilation of “ Pegasus,” the sporting contributor to the Dunedin “Evening Star” :
Table showing the 'Number of Eace-Meetinos held in each Province, and the amount of added money given hy tho Jockey Clubs :
In tho above list very small meetings, such as the Saturday afternoon races at Dunedin and Auckland have not been included. The amount of the sweepstakes for the various races is not included, so that the full value of the stakes run for is not represented. There is an increase for the season of fifteen meetings and about £IOOO in stakes as compared with the previous season. Otago is again at the head of affairs as prizegiver, closely followed as usual by Auckland, which has on this occasion supplanted Canterbury. Tho other provinces maintain their respective positions. Canterbury shows a falling off of about £6O, and Taranaki of £270; all the others show an increase. A couple of meetings were held in Nelson Province, but neither was under the auspices of the Nelson Club.
Table Showing the Added Monet Given bt the Principal Jocket Clubs in each Province, tlie largest amount £2295) at a single meeting being given by the Canterbury Jockey Club at its spring gathering, and the next largest (£1955) by the Danedin Jockey Club at its principal meeting :
Tho clubs showing a reduction are Dunedin, £4OO ; Wellington, £435 ; Taranaki, £l6O ; Hokitika, £IOO ; Waitaki, £9O ; and Wairarapa, £6O. Table Showing the 'Winnings in Stakes of those Owners who have Won over £SOO during the Season "
The above leaves about £16,500 divided amongst smaller winners. The principal money bos boon this season far more equally divided than usual, there being nearly double I ho ordinary number of winners of over £SOO. Last season Mr E. Bay headed tho list, with Messrs Mason and Yallanca second; this time their places are changed. Still tho Yaldhurst stable are £6OO behind their previ-
ous winnings ; while Mr Bay has fallen off more than £2OOO. Mr Walters has, through the agency of his three-year-olds, gained £1207 on his former record. Mr P. Butler is within a score of pounds of last season, for though The Agent has won this time £BOO less than last, the horses which he purchased last year have made up the deficiency. Mr Stead is £247 better, and* Mr Q-oodraan has improved nearly £SOO. Mr Keith has been more fortunate than before, thanks principally to Soukar’s assistance. Mr Outts’ money represents Mata’s winnings, that horse having run in his name during the season. Mr M'lvor stands at about his previous level, while Mr Lunn and the brothers M'Kay re-appear os fair winners after a temporary absence from high positions. The rest are new names in the roll of winners of over £SOO, although Mr Lennard and Mr Povrdroll are old racing men of note.
