RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting was held in the new chambers on Friday evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Good, .Burt, Ivory, Stephens and Rills. His Worship congratulated the members on the satisfactory completion of the municipal offices, and tho comfortable furnishing of the rooms. He felt that considerable credit was due to the several committees under whom the work had been done, and to Messrs Gulliver Bros., the contractors and furnishers. The remarks of the Mayor were generally endorsed. Correspondence was received and read from the returning-officer, notifying the re-election of Mr J. {Johnston as Councillor, and stating that as ho doubted the legality of the nomination of Messrs Hugh Boyd and Charles J. Luxton, ho had taken tho advice of Mr Clarke, solicitor, who gave as his opinion that the nomination was illegal, that when names of a firm were only specified generally on the burgess roll, no one member of that firm would bo qualified to act as a Councillor, tho Christian name and surname in full were required according to the Municipal Corporations’ Act. Ho (tho returning-officer) had therefore to declare that these gentlemen were not qualified to act. From the Commissioner of Charitable Aid (a) re Mr Vaughan, for whom ho had no suitable employment ; (b) re Mr Gough, who could not bo admitted to Old Man's Home, (c) Mrs Watt, whose case did not call for assistance, (d) Mr Fennell, to whom full rations were allowed, (c) Enclosing an aplioation from F. Houghton, (f) Enclosing cheque for allowance to the several recipients of aid. From Colonial Secretary, stating that Mr J. J. Robinson was gazetted registrar of dogs for the borough. From the Colonial Treasurer, remitting amount of fines received from R.M. Court, From Collector of Customs, stating that £2 5s had been paid to the Bank account for stage carriage licenses. From Mr W. H. Rose, to know if the claim for rates was for property late Thorne’s. Or. Burt proposed that Mr Houghton’s application for charitable aid bs referred back to tho commissioner, seconded by tho Mayor, and carried. Cr. Good proposed that the footpath of Victoria street be drained, and the surveyor be instructed to supervise same. Cr. Burt seconded. Carried. The town clerk stated that Mr Gough had been admitted into the Christchurch Hospital. Or, Burt proposed that Mrs Watts’ case be recommended by Mr March. The town clerk was instructed to lay the matter clearly before tho commissioner. His Worship the Mayor and several councillors expressed their regret at the disqualification of Mr H. Boyd, He would, they hoped, be again amongst them; they would miss his good council. The town clerk was instructed to call for fresh elections, and to obtain copies! of the Municipal Corporations Act Amendment, 1880. His Worship called attention to wilful destruction or young trees newly planted on Blackett street, and stated that it was intended to prosecute the culprits. Respecting cost of improving Maria Andrews Park, he had written to Mr Bowen requesting that gentleman to ascertain if money in hands of the recreation trustees could be devoted to such improvements. He (tho Mayor) thought that tho recreation reserve, and this park might be brought under tho Domain Board. The credit balance ot Bank was £302 10a 7d. Accounts, amounting to £BS 3s Id, were passed for payment. It was proposed and carried "That tenders for advertising the Borough Council’s notices in a lump sum bo called for,” The report of tho borough surveyor was then read. Or. Ivory moved “ That notice be served on occupants of property or otherwise to keep the front of their premises free from gorse or other obstructions.” Or. Stephens seconded. Carried. Cr. Burt gave notice that at tho next meeting of Council he would propose that their meetings be held at shorter intervals. Mrs Colson’s case for charitable aid was discussed, and decided to leave same iu abeyance. The surveyor was instructed to test and report on tho suitableness of a portion of the borough ground for a graval pit, it being stated that a strip of gravel could be traced, through the borough trom tho western boundary, and passing through this ground. After some discussion as to further furnishing the new Council Chamber with curtains, &0., and other mutters, the Council adjourned.
