MANDEVILLE AND RANGIORA DRAINAGE DISTRICT.
A public meeting wag held at the Eyreton Hoad Board office, Ohoka, on Friday evening, at which sixteen ratepayers attended. Mr Isaac Wilson, chairman of the Eyreton Eoad Board, occupied the chair. He stated that the meeting was called in compliance with a request made by Mr Guild. That gentleman, as a member of tho Eyreton Board had wished tho Board to pass a motion condemning the action of tho conservators of the drainage district, but as it was considered to be a ratepayers’ question this meeting had been called. Ho might add that it now transpired that the Board of Conservators had not been legally in existence for about four years since the passing of the amended Canterbury Rivers Act. It was hardly possible for the meeting to take any steps, in fact ho did not see that they need go on. In reply to a ratepayer, the chairman said Mr Joj nt had discovered this flaw in the constitution of the Board of Conservators. His opinion was that if tho Counties Act was adopted there would bo no need for a Drainage Board. The residents in Ashley county were at a decided disadvantage in respect to drainage by tho nonadoption of that Act. Mr Guild moved—- “ That the action of certain individuals in tho Bangiora and Mandevillo drainage district bo condemned, having without asking those most interested carried out drainage works which have caused great damage to the district.” Mr Harris seconded, and the motion was agreed to. In reply to!a ratepayer it was stated that the Eyreton Boad Board had paid its full share of the works of tho drainage district to date, the last payment being made the day before. The chairman explained that ratepayers were now in this satisfactory condition—that the Road Board wanted no rate from them this year, and tho Beard of Conservators could not claim any rate, Mr Guild hoped it would now be competent to cut away tho banks at No. 1 drain. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.
