At a meeting of the above association held in the Town Hall, Ashburton, last Wednesday evening, the Mayor in the chair, the secretary read a report, whioh was to the effect that straw plait, parchment, paper, glue, colza oil, and a bone faotory might be advantageously established. The following subcommittees were appointed to inquire into the undermentioned subjects :—Woollen industries, Dr. Trevor, Messrs. Braddell, Clark and Revanß; beetroot sugar-making, Messrs. Eyton, Eriedlander, Williamson, Ward and Purnell; minerals, Messrs. Cox, S. Saunders, Tucker, Potter and Pavitt; tanning aud leather, Messrs. Shury, Zouch, Guinneaß, Steele and Homersham; linseed and linen, Messrs. Jacobson, Grigg, Hodder and Young; cheese factories, Messrs. G-rigg, Hunt and Clarke; starch, Messrs. J. Orr, Bullock, Mayo and Harrison; oatmeal, Messrs. Moffatt, Jameson, Carter and Dr. Stewart. It was also resolved, on the suggestion of Dr. Trevor, to consider tho practicability of manufacturing glasß from the sand in the district. Mr John Smith, who had many years' experience in woollen factories, gave his opinion that the district was well adapted for a woollen factory, and a letter from Mr Kemp, of Rakaia, read by Mr Jacobson, endorsed that opinion. Mr Bullock addressed the meeting at some length on the subject of capital, arguing that persons could easily be got to take up shares in a local enterprise. Mr Jaoobson endorsed that opinion, and said he was told that for a capital of £3OOO a woollen factory on a small scale might be established. Some further discussion having taken place on the subject of beet root, the Mayor pointing out that it would be very advantageous, the meeting adjourned.
