THE RAILWAY EMPLOYES.
We learn from official sources that it would appear that the agitation on the part of the railway employes is the result of misunderstanding, as to the time at which the reductions should commence. Instructions have now been given that reduction shall only tako effect after a full week from the time wh6n the men were notified that it was to be made. The reduction ordered is not a uniform 10 per cent., but one which assimilates the rates for Government work to those that prevail outside Government employment, and the making of it has been distinctly imposed upon the Government by Parliament. The scale of reduction adopted is one recommended by the Commissioner as far back as June 14th. The Government have no intention whatever of abandoning the proposed reduction, whioh will only place their employes on the same footing as others outside the service. A meeting of the railway employes was held last evening, at which a telegram containing generally the above facts, in reference to the intentions of the Government was read, and it was resolved by the meeting to postpone further action until the revised scale of wages shall be made known.
