WELLINGTON, August 17. A Belligerent Schoolmaster. At the Magistrates’ Court to-day, H. Willis, a schoolmaster at the Hutt, was sentenced to two months' hard labor for assaulting a resident there. Police ItemsMatthew Henderaon, on a charge of larceny as a bailee and embezzlement, was again remanded. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Johnston, assistant clerk to the magistrate at Masterton. The charge is for embezzling £3O of Court monies. AUCKLAND, August 16. The Benedictine Priests. Referring to the Benedictine priests, for whose accommodation negotiations have been opened for the purchase of Dr. Wallis’s church and manse, the local Catholic organ, the “Freeman’s Journal,” says intelligence has reached Auckland that on July 19th the Very Rev. Father Adelbert Sullivan, 0.5.8., I accompanied by Father Tuck, 0.3.8., left Brindisi for Auckland. On arrival at Adelaide they will be joined by Lord Abbott Alcack, 0.5.8, Father Fox, 0.5.8., and several lay brothers, and the party may be expected in Auckland by the middle of September. QRAHAMSTOWN, August 16. Fatal Termination. The man Andrew Clark, who was injured this day week in the Hauraki saw mill bush by a log slipping, died in tho Hospital last night. News for Good TemplarsOf the hotels recently closed, one'waa this morning opened as a temperance hotel, and tho other as an ironmongery and furniture warehouse. NEW PLYMOUTH. August IS. Jockey Club.
At a meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club the total receipts were reported to be £1483 13s 4d, and the expenditure £1419 2s, including a sum of £476 18s for tho purchase of a
racecourse lease. The next race meeting is to bo held on March 31sl and April Ist, 1881. The Eowena and Forest QueenBath vessels are still ashore, but are likely to be got oft. The Forest Queen is insured for £6OO in the New Zealand Company, but the Rowena is uninsured. WELLINGTON, August 16. Further ChargesHenderson was again arrested during the afternoon on two charges alleged to have been committed at Christchurch. The first is larceny as a bailee of a watch valued at £-40, and the second the embezzlement of £lO, money of the trustee in a bankrupt estate. Prisoner was remanded until to-morrow, to await the arrival of the warrant, bail being allowed, himself in £3OO and two sureties of £l5O each. Mining News. It is stated that several parties are golddigging at Terawhiti, about ten miles from here, and although they are without proper sluicing appliances, are making fair wages. Official information received from Lake Mapourika'diggings recommends that tho rush should be discouraged, as it is being overdone. And as it is a matter of time to get at the gold, either deep sinking or tunnels being necessary, men without means will find themselves in difficulties. The Late Mr IrelandThe remains of the late Mr Ireland, M.H.8., were sent to Lyttelton by the steamer Hinemoa this afternoon. The funeral procession to the wharf was largely attended. TIMARU, August 16. Charge of Embezzlement. John Blair, formerly receiving goods clerk at the railway, was committed for trial for embezzling £7 7s. During the last month of his engagement he had torn up way bills without entering moneys received. His defalcations altogether amount to about £IOO.
