M- Gambetta, M, Gambetta has written a letter in which he says that the democracy will strengthen Prance, and will enable her to recover the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, which she lost during the last war with the Germans. PARIS, August 16. M- Gambetta’s Letter. It now transpires that M. Gambotta’s letter is of old date, and has not been recently written, as at first supposed. LONDON, August 15. Obituary. Yiscount Stratford de Redcliffe is dead. LONDON, August 16. Irish Affairs. Numerous land meetings are being held throughout Ireland. At a recent meeting at Kildare, Mr Dillon, Home-rule member for Tipperary, made several seditious speeches. A Great Work. The cathedral which has been in course of construction at Cologne for some time past is now completed. CALCUTTA, August 15. Affairs at Candahar. Confirmatory information has been received from Candahar, which states that Ayoub Khan has commenced military operations against that place, which is now in a state of siege.
