CRICKET NOTES.
By Not Out. It may not bo generally known that a split ooourred a short time ago amongst the Gloucestershire County Eleven, but such is the fact, and in consequence this eleven, which had hitherto proved almost unrivalled, has fallen from its high position and is not nearly so formidable as in former years. I forgot the precise cause of rupture, but, whatever it was, it led to the principal amateurs in the county declining to take any part in its matches. Messrs Townsend, Moberley, and Miles, as well as other firstclass players, are always absent from the Gloucestershire Eleven. Such a state of things is to be deplored, because tho cricket of this Eleven is now more than ever confined to the achievements of the three Graces, and when they fail the result is not generally a happy one for tho hitherto almost invincible county. Their recent defeat by the Australian Eleven may have been partly owing to this internal dissension, as I can scarcely reconcile the telegram of the bad fielding of Gloucestershire if the old Eleven had been in the field, as this was one of their strongest points, and Mr W. G. Grace's fine bowiing averages are in a great measure due to the excellence which has alwayß been displayed in the particular department. By the last mail from England particulars are to hand of a match between Gloucestershire and Surrey, and, as a proof of the weakness of the former team, they were beaten by 82, or more than equal to as many as they averaged per innings. The scoring throughout was small, Surrey making 114 in each innings, while Gloucester only put together 84 and 62. For tho former oounty, Messrs J. Shuter, 2S and 17, A. P. Luoas, 13 and 29, and Jupp, 13 and 27, were the chief contributors, while, with tho exception of Messrs W. G. Grace, 9 and 27, G. F. Grace, 24 and 4, and W. E. Gilbert, 1 and 19, very little resistance was offered to the bowling of Surrey, for whom Potter and Blamires performed with great effect in tho first innings, and in the second Mr A. P. Lucas was particularly destructive,'securing five wickets for 23 runs; while Potter was oredited with four wickets for 20 runs. Tho following is the score, which will show who at present play for Gloucester:— Surrey.

Total 84 Total 62 One of the most exciting matches that have been played lately was between Oxford University and the M. 0.0. The scoring waß very small, owing to the bad weather. The University were first at the wickets, but could not make more than 53, the bowling of Shaw and Morley being irresistible. The Club fared little better, as their total only showed 80 at the fall of the last wicket. Mr Erans bowled remarkably well, his expresses being very destructive. The University improved slightly on their first innings, but a till could not put together more than 75, leaving the Club 40 to get; a task whioh very nearly proved beyond their powers, had it not been for the resolute batting of A. Shaw, who has frequently proved himself to be no mean performer with the bat as well as with the ball when requirod, Mr Evans in this innings waß again very successful, his five wickets oosting him 23 runs. The following is the score, but the eleven which played for Oxford is not likely to be the same as as played against Cambridge later on, as some of tho best players oould not take part in the match against the M. 0.0.: Oxford University.
