LECTURE AT RANGIORA.
" The Telephone Explained and Illustrated " formed the subject of a lecture given on Tuesday evening, at the Literary Institute, Rangisra, by Mr W. G. Meddings. Tho lecturer, who was introduced by the Ven. Archdeacon Dudley, spoke of the various kinds of telephones in use, and proceeded to explain the working of Professor Ball's invention, the instrument in use by him, the " proper " telephone, as he called it, illustrating the samo by diagrams and models. At the termination of a moat enjoyable hour thus spent, his Worship the Mayor proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Meddings for his interesting lecture and kindness in meeting them that evening. During this time arrangemonts had been mado to communicate with Oxford, where a band of several instruments was stationed. As there were but six receivers, only six persons oould hear ata time, and ticket-holders wore therefore led in small parties to the room where tho instruments were fixed ; and so, without any special inconvenience, all, in time, were enabled to participate. For the enjoyment of those not thus occupied, an excellent program mo of vocal and instrumental music was gone through in the hall, the efforts of the various ladies and gentlemen oliciting general approbation. Some Bongs wero then given for the benefit of those at Oxford who had contributed to the evening's enjoyment, and communicated on by telephone. Tho arrangements were somewhat wearisome, hut altogether a pleasant evening was spent. Unfortunately, the financial result will help the Organ Fund Committee (in whoso aid the entertainment was given) but very little, as the attendance was but small.
