SEAMEN'S UNION.
A very largely attended meeting of those interested in establishing a seamen's union was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Lyttelton, on Tuesday night. Mr B.R. Webb was voted to tho chair, and after a few preliminary remarks introduced Mr Sangoter, a representative from the Union in Melbourne. Mr Sangater gave an interesting account of the work done by the Bociety with which ho was oonnected and at whose instance h 3 had come to New Zealand for tho purpose of establishing branches at Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland. At the first-Earned port he had been very successful. Mr Sangater was heartily applauded at tho conclusion of his address. Mr Bennington and one or two others made a few remarks upon the proposal to form a Union here, the feeling apparently being that unless the lumpers co-operated with the Bailors there were too few of the latter sailing out of Lyttelton to make it a success. ' Ultimately it was resolved to form a Union, and a few names were enrolled, the understanding being that another meeting would be held on Friday night in the room below tho Hall.
