INQUEST AT LYTTELTON GAOL.
An inquest was held on Wednesday afternoon in H.M. Gaol, Lyttelton, by the coroner and a jury, of whom Mr Henry Jackson was chosen foreman, on the body of "William John Mahoney. Samuel Charles Phillips, chief gaoler, produced the warrant under which deceased was held a prisoner for seven years* penal servitude from the District Court, Timaru. He arrived as a prisoner in August, 1876, on transfer, and for a day or two at a time he was on the siok list. The first serious attack of illness was in April last, and he had been ten times on the siok list since. His last illnoss oommenced on July 22nd, and ho expired on August 3rd. John T. Bouse, gaol surgeon, testified that the deceased had been under his attendance from time to time during a year and a half. He was suffering from consumption, for which he was treated. He died of pulmonary consumption, the immediate cause being loss of blood. To a juror—He had not been at hard labor for four months, but had been out with the others at his own request, more for fresh air than anything else. John Smyth, a fellow prisoner, said he had been in the hospital attending the deceased. The deceased expressed himself pleased with the treatment he received and the kindness of the chief gaoler. He had anything in the way of food he expressed a wish for. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical officer's testimony.
