MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday, July 22.

[Before J. L. Lee, Esq , and R. Westenra, Esq., J.P.’s.] Drunkenness. —A first offender was fined ss. Thomas Hughes was fined ss, there being a former conviction against him. Bbbach of the Peacb, —Thomas Jardine was fined 10s for committing a breach of the peace. Soiled Doves. —Mary Ryan and Alice Herbert, two girls who have commenced an evil career, pleaded guilty to a charge of using obscene language in Gloucester street. It appeared that they had left their homos, or the service to which they had been put, and were becoming utterly depraved. Former convictions were proved against Ryan, who was fined 40s, in default one month’s imprisonment ; and Herbert was fined 20s, with the option of a fortnight’s imprisonment. Lakoeny by a Chinaman. —Ah Tong, apprehended at Port Lyttelton the previous day when endeavouring to get away by the Wakatipu, for Sydney, was charged with stealing a swag, tho value of £3, tho property of Chew Land. Inspector O’Donnell asked that, the hearing of this case should bo defer: ed until Monday next, in order that evidence might bo collated and the swag produced. Mr Thomas, who appeared for accused, said the swag had been distrained for debt. Accused kept a boarding house at Oamaru, and Chew Land owned him 355, Ho (prisoner) was going to take a trip to China and back, so in the meantime ho maintained possession of the swag until the debt was settled. He had taken out a summons agaiaet the prosecutor, and the matter would form tho subject of civil proceedings. Accused was remanded until Monday and admitted to bail.

Stearins a Coat. —William Tracy pleaded “ Guilty ” to stealing an overcoat and gloves, the property of F. O. Shipton, commercial traveller. Accused offered the coat to the barman at the A 1 Hotel for 2a, and tho latter being suspicious gave him in charge. Prisoner had nothing further to say than that ho had been drinking heavily, aud as there was a largo number of previous convictions he was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Fowl Stealing. —Elizabeth Yates was charged with stealing two fowls, valued at 10s, the property of Annie Clark. Accused said they had been given to her. The police asked for a remand, as there were a number of cases of a similar nature pending. Prisoner was remanded until the following day.
