POULTRY, PIGEON, AND CANARY SOCIETY.
Hon. Secretary—Mr W. T. C. Mills. Committee of Management—Messrs T. Stapleton, E. Strange, VV. H. Porter, W. G. Walker, W. E. Earnshaw, P. Taylor, C. Adkin, E. Rees, J. Nancarrow, J. J. Parker, G. A. Beads, C Coombs.
The Annual Exhibition in connection with the above society took place on Wednesday in the Oddfellows’ Hall, and so far as the quality of the birds exhibited in the various classes are concerned was fully up to the standard. Indeed, in some of them, they were above what have boon shown in former years. As might bo expected from the still potent attraction of tho Industrial Exhibition, the attendance of visitors during tho afternoon was not, very large. The committee had made very excellent arrangements frr the exhibition of the birds, the pens being arranged around the sides of the hall, and in three aisles down the middle. The canaries are on the stage and the pigeons in the largo room in rear of the hall. As though the almost incessant noise created by the various roosters was not sufficient, some exhibitor has sent a magpie which persists in making tho most unearthly noises. Taking tho show in order of the catalogue, tho first to be noticed is the game fowls. In black red single game cocks the class as a whole were not first class. The first prize went to Mr Leversedgo, jun., who also took Mr Martin’s prize for best rod game coek in tho show. This bird is a very good specimen of tho modern game cock of this class, Tho second prize bird, belonging to Mr M. Donohue—who, by the way, swept off a number of prizes—was a very nice bird, but tho colors of hackle and saddle were somewhat too dark according to standard. In the brown breasted and ginger class tho number of entries was small, but the birds were fairly representative, Mr Donohue scored another first prize with a good bird, though wanting a litte more shoulder. Mr Donohue took second prize in this class also, though the bird was somewhat deficient in evenness of color. In duekwings Mr Donohue was first with a good colored bird, which had, however, a badly sot on tail. The second prize was also taken by Mr Donohue with a capital bird. In black and white single game cocks, Mr Weedon took a second prize, the judges not awarding a first on account of the yellowish color and flowing hackle. The other birds in this class, though good in color, were very coarse. In the class for piles, Mr Hicks took first prize with a well-colored bird, except that the legs should have been lighter. It may be remarked also that it was entirely unnecessary to have called in the aid of the hair-dresser, the marks of trimming on the head being plainly visible. Mr Donohue had a very little compact bird, which was awarded second prize, but ho wanted substance. In the black-breasted single hens, Mr Leversedgo had one of tho prettiest hens in the show, and deservedly got a first prize. Mr Frazer's exhibit, which received second prize, was a nice bird, well colored. In the brown breasted, Mr Donohue had a first pnze for a fairly good bird, but somewhat deficient in symmetry and color. No second prize was awarded in this ebss. Mr Donohue once more secured a win in tho duckwing class. Mr Hicks took first prize in single pile hens, with a grand exhibit, though hero again the lege are somewhat dark. Mr Donohue’s hen, which took second prize, is a very nice one, but lacking substance. Next year, no doubt, sho will show to better advantage. Tho class for game cocks under twelve months does not require any comment, the birds being far below the usual show standard. Mr Donohue took tho first prize for single game hen, and also Mr Shand’s special prize with a grand hen (black red). From her size it would appear that this hen was quite old enough to appear in the class. In the Malay class Mr Preece took first prize with a good hen. The second prize winner is small, and has a bad head. In the Dorking class, a white was very good. In silver grey cocks Mr Pope took first prize with a good upstanding bird. Mr James, of Dunedin, was tho only exhibitor in the any age and under twelve months classes of
with a grand bird in the colored dorking cooks’ class. Mr James, of Dunedin, came second with a very nice bird, but lacking the size of the first prize bird. Mr Hall’s exhibit got Mr Fereday’s special prize also. In the Dorking hen class there were six entries, Mr Short taking
first with a splendid bird. Mr Richards secured second with a good bird, and Mr S. James, ot Dunedin, had a highly commended. Tho show ot coloured Dorking cocks, under twelve months, was highly creditable. The first prize and Mr Gould’s special prize were taken by Mr Morris wbh a grand bird. Mr J. H. Hall was second with a splendidly framed bird. The same exhibitor also secured a highly commended. The class for coloured Dorking hens under twelve months was splendidly filled, being by far tho best show we have had here of these birds. Mr H. Oookson took the first prize and Mr Gould’s special with a magnificent hen showing all tho points of tho Dorking. Mr Pope was second with a nieo bird, and Messrs Wraggo and Pope received a highly commended. In tho class for white Dorking cocks Mr McGregor took first and Mr Pervman second. In the class for adult hens Mr Poryman took first and second prizes, and the same in the young classes for Dorking cooks and hens. The Spanish class was well represented. In the class for adult cooks Mr W. White took first prize, and Messrs Petersen and Co.’s prize for beet Spanish cock in the show. Mr Atkinson took second prize. In Spanish lions Mr Mayzs took first prize, and Mr Short tho second. In the class for cooks under twelve months, Mr Siiort took first and Mr White second. Mr Short had a nine months’ bird, which was highly aommended. The hens under twelve months were ot fair average merit, Mr J. Short being first. Tho Cochin classes were capitally filled, some splendid birds being exhibited. The same may be said of the Brahmas, which wore a credit to any ehow. Messrs Saunders, Strange, and J. H. Hall exhibited some Langshans, which, from their rarity hero and the controversy which has taken place at homo with regard to them, wore objects of much curiosity. The Hamburghs were exceedingly good throughout. In tho golden spangled class, the first prize pen exhibited from Mosgiel were a splendid pair ot birds. Mr Turner, who took second prize, had a nice pen. Mr White, who was tho only exhibitor in silver spangled, took first prize with a pretty pair of birds. There were throe exhibits of golden pencilled, Mr E. Rowland taking first and special prize with a magnificent pen. Mr Steiuncr was the second prize taker with two nice birds. Mr Yerdon’s entry was wrongly given as silver pencilled instead of silver spangled. The golden spangled, under twelve months, brought out a very fine pen from Mosgiel, Mr Mackie taking first prize, Mr Brizzley coming second. Mr White took first prize in the young silver spangled class. The show of bamams as a whole was not so good as on previous occasions. In the black red class, Mr J. Board had two very handsome birds, and took first prize. In the second prize pen tho birds were somewhat largo and faulty in color.. In duokwing bantams there wore only two entries. The judges only highly commended tho pair in Mr Mills’ pen, tho cook being too largo and deficient in color. Mr S. James, of Dunedin, had a pen of golden Sebrights, but the judges were unable to award them a prize, the legs not being the proper color according to standard. Mr Robertson, ot Port Chalmers, had a pretty pen of silver Sebrights, to which a first prize was awarded, but tho birds wore far too young for exhibition. In the class for any other variety there were three paJrs exhibited. Mr Roberison, of Port OhaDsiors, took a second prize with a good pen of blacks, though they were also too young. The same remark would apply to a pen of silver Sebrights, exhibited by Mr Robertson, which was highly commended. Tho pigeons were good both as regards the number and quality of tho exhibits. Some of tho carriers exhibited by Mr W. G. Walker were really magnificent birds. In the canary classes Mr Stapleton was, as usual, to the fore, though he had a formidable rival in Mr W. C. Hill, whose exhibits wore really first class. Tho show will be open again to day. The following were tho judges in the various classes :
For game Malays and bantams —Mr E. Rees For Dorkings, Spanish, and Hamburgs—Mr T. Stapleton. For Cochins, Brahmas, Polish, and French fowls—Mr J. Wood.
For pigeons—Messrs W. G. Walker and T. H. Turner.
