PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.

[from: orb own oobbbbpondbnt. | WELLINGTON, July 21.

An official notification ot the extension of time for sending in the property tax returns, from the 2nd to the 31st proximo, day. As a matter of fact, the fixing of oven the later date now appointed may be a purely formal proceeding; for until Parliament has approved ot the modifications proposed by the Colonial Treasurer, the amended and simplified forms cannot be issued, and it would probably be found impracticable to enforce the original schedules. The only nows received from the front today by the Government is that tho telegraph wire has been completed along tho whole length of the lino of road now under construction by tho Constabulary. The wires now reach right across tho disturbed country from one side to the other—from Waingongoro to Stony river. There have been no fresh obstructions on tho part of tho Natives, and no now development of any kind in the aspect of affairs.

There is not much probability of the report of tho Railway Commission being presented earlier than next week. The Public Works Statement is promised then. The return showing the amount paid to Messrs Grant and Poster, in connection with their visit to Now Zealand, shows a total of £547, including £249 passages to Now Zealand and £245 passages to England. The return of the amounts of subsidies paid to Auckland, Canterbury and Otago since tho passing of tho Financial ArrangoAct, 1876, shows Auckland to have received £113,621, Canterbury £139,903, Otago, £218,876, total £472,402.

Tho return of tho amount of the customs revenue for the year ended March 31st shows a total of £975 926. Out. of this Auckland contributed £175,168, Wellington £142,090, Dunedin £285,018, Christchurch £151,310. The cost of collection for tho whole colony oer cant, was £3 4s 3d, as against £2 17» 8d aat year. The average for ton years in tho United Kingdom was €3 8s lOd.
