LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of this Council was held on Monday night. Present —Ors. Hawkins' (chairman), Grubb, Weyburn, McClatohie, Wood, Baed, Smith. The receipts since the previous meeting were stated to have been £347 Is 2d. Messrs Garfortb and Lee wrote saying that they had completed the repairs to their slaughter-house premises, and asking that their license be renewed. The inspector of nuisances reported that the premises were exceedingly clean, cleaner than he had ever seen them. The license was granted to the end of the present year. Accounts amounting to £143 Os 7d were passed for payment. An account of Messrs Scott Brothers was referred to the water supply committee. The report of the water supply committee upon the applications for the position of water tender was read, their recommendation being that A. Boots be appointed. There wore eighty-four applications. The recommendation was confirmed, and the report adopted, Or. Grubb dissenting. The engineer at the pumping station made his usual report, the suggestions made therein being agreed to as to purchasing a pair of valves and some dies. The inspector of nuisances reported upon a nuisance en the tunnel reserve. Attention was called to the small number of registrations of dogs this year as against 1879. The clerk was instructed to write to the sergeant-major of police. Several Councillors spoke of the nuisance caused by cattle wandering at large. Or. Wood asked the opinion of the Council as to applications made to the Charitable Aid committee. The Councillor said the applications for relief were increasing at such a rate as to become a most serious matter. Or. Wood was empowered to use discretionary power, and another councillor was added to the committee.
