ASHLEY ROAD BOARD ELECTION.
A meeting of ratepayers was hold at the Ashley Road Board office on Friday, 25th inst., to elect a member in the room of Mr S. Bar well, resigned. MrE. Brown acted as returning officer. He explained the proceedings, and invited any ratepayer to propose a candidate. The nomination of Mr F. Croft was proposed by Mr D. Brook, and seconded by Mr O. Graham; that of Mr Walter Nicholl, proposed by Mr John McFarlane, and seconded by Mr Chas. A. Cunningham; and that of MV James Feather, by Mr W. Richards, and seconded by Mr Michael Fitzgibbon. No other candidate being nominated, a show of hands was taken as follows : —Mr Oroft, 5 ; Mr Nicholl, 3 ; Mr Feather, 4. A poll was demanded by Mr Nicholl. It closed at four o’clock. Immediately after the returning officer announced the numbers to be—Croft, 87; Nicholl, 43. Mr Feather having retired
in favor of Mr Oroffc, tho latter was declared duly elected, and returned thanks to the ratepayers for returning him, and promised his best services to their interests. Mr Nioholl thanked those who supported him, and although defeated this time, he declared his intention of trying for a seat on the Board at the first vacancy. A meeting of the Board was held immediately after the election, and Mr Anthony Hodgson elected chairman.
