LOSS OF THE S.S. WANGANUI AND TWO LIVES.
TPEE PEBS3 ASSOCIATION SPECIAL WIBB.] DUNEDIN, June 21. The Standard Insurance Company have received a telegram advising them of the total loss of Messrs Houghton and Co.'s steamei Wanganuibetween Sydney and the Clarence River. She was insured for £3500, distributed as follows :—Australian Alliance, £437 10s ; Derwent and Tamar, £437 10s ; Batavia, £4,37 10s ; Union of New Zealand, £437 10s ; Colonial of New Zealand, £437 10j ; National of New Zealand, £437 10s ; Globe, £437 10s; Imperial, £2lB 153 ; Universal, £2lB 15s. Captain Bayldon telegraphed this afternoon to Messrs Houghton and Co. from Clarence Heads, which is 320 miles -from Sydney:— " Wanganui total loss ; sunk ; two lives lost." The Wanganui was trading between Sydney and the Clarence. The National office took out in Sydney a £3500 policy, distributing the amount among the offices above enumerated. The less, therefore, falls on the Sydney branches of the companies named. The vessel's value is put down at £6OOO.
[EBirrEB'S TEtEGBAMS.] SYDNEY, June 21. The Bteamer Wanganui has been wrecked at the Clarence Heads, and sunk after striking the reef. All lives have been saved except wo of the crew.
