BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION.

The usual weekly meeting of the committee of the above was held at two o'clock in the afternoon yesterday. Present —His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Messrs Ollivier, Packer, Hargreaves, J. A. Bird, and Pratt. Mr March was also presont by invitation of the committee. The Mayor reported the receipt from Mr Morton, on behalf of the licensed victuallers, tho sum of £l4 13a. Mr Pratt reported the purchase of more blankets and flannel, in addition to thoae purchased last week. Accounts to the amount of £ll7 12s were passed and ordered to be paid. A letter was read from Mr I. B. Sheath, stating that he was unable to attend the meetings of the committee, and declining to act upon the committee for that reason. Oa the motion of Mr Ollivier, Mr W. R. Mitchell was appointed a member of the committee in place of Mr Sheath. The balance reported at the Bank was £ll6 4s lid, after paying the accounts passed. A letter was read from the committee of tho unemployed asking that the association should place small Bums of money in their hands to pay the rent of those who had fallen behind, and who were in danger of losing their furniture, also those persons who had sickness in their families, but who declined to apply to public charities. Mr Ollivier moved—" That Mr laherwood be informed, in answer to hi 3 letter, that this institution was not established for the purpose of granting money relief to any cases coming before them, but simply to prevent extreme distress resulting from want cf food. If, in the opinion of this committee, circumstances should arise rendering it necessary to depart from this fundamental rule, the committee •are of opinion that the machinery they have set in motion would meet the case. From | -their recognised position'as"an elected committee from the general body of their subscribers, •they could not in any case feel justified in •delegating their functions to any other body." Mr Hargreaves seconded the motion, which was agreed to unanimously. Mr Ollivier said he would be prepared at next meeting to bring up a digest of what had been done by the Association up to date. The Chairman mentioned that Messrs Lightband, Allan and Co. and Mr George had forwarded parcels of oots for the use of tho institution. A letter read stating that twenty men had been

sent np to Mr Johns, on the Papanui road. Mr Hargreaves moved—" That in no caße can the committee give relief in money." Mr Ollivier seconded the motion, which was agroed to unanimously. The committee then adjourned.
