LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ÜBual meeting of this Council was held on Monday night. There were present— Ors. J. D. Macpherson (in the chair), Weyburn, McOlatohie, Beed, J. W. Smith. The business was unusually limited, and the Council rose soon after eight o'clock. Applications from Andrew Christiansen and William Eoederer for appointment to the position of water tender at the wharf were left •with the water supply committee. The clerk to the Port Chalmers Council wrote, asking for information as to the action that hadbeen taken as to rating the sheds on the railway pier, and was left in abeyance, the clerk to acknowledge receipt of the letter. The inspector of nuisances reported upon the?' action he had taken to ascertain who the parties were who had thrown night soil into the drains. So far he had been unsuccessful in making any arrests. In re Mr Raider's application for improvements the Sumner road, the works committee reported that they could not recommend that the work be done as Mr Nalder wished further than that metal be laid on the load. The report was adopted. Mr Kent, engineer at the pumping station, reported npon the kind of j fuel he was using, and thought that coke, with a little coal, would answer his purpose. Also, requested that he be allowed to procure some trees to plant around the works, a request which was left with Mr Sowden to attend to. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Hawkins. In answer to Cr. McClatchie the foreman of works stated that no person had been hired by him in the man Blackler's place. Cr. Smith drew attention to the small sum of rates that had come in, and it was resolved that a final notice be advertised to the effect that legal proceedings would be taken to recover all rates not paid within fourteen days. The question of procuring some of the shingle brought to the port by the shipping as ballast was raised by Cr. Beed, and Cr. McClatchie intimated that he would be happy to give the foreman of works any assistance in his power to obtain the shingle. Cr. Grubb thought some of it might be laid along the street in •front of his property. Tb. 9 receipts of the Council since the previous meeting amounted to £204 Is 3d, and accounts amounting to £9l lis 6d were passed for payment.
