[PBESS ASSOCIATION. | NAPIEB, June 17. Criminal Sessions. The jury, after being locked up all night in the caee of Shaw, for arson, brought in a verdict " G-uilty." The prisoner pleaded guilty to the embezzlement, and was sentenced to four years for arson and three years for embezzlement, the sentences to run concurrent. Daniel Eagan, for larceny as a baillee, was sentenced to two years. WELLINGTON, June 17. The Property Tax. At a meeting at Johnsonville list night it was resolved that the repeal of the Property Tax is desirable and that an Income Tax should be substituted, and that a Land Tax should be levied on land in distiicts which have constructed railways. The Corporation Act Amendment Bill. A petition to the House of Representatives against the Municipal Corporation Act Amendment Bill 1880 is in coursa of signature. The Beer Tax. At a meeting between the brewers and the publicans the former stated that they were determined to adhere to their first resolution that the tax be charged upon the customers. DUNEDIN,-_June 17. Appointment' Henry Houghton has received the appointment of Chief Insurance Agent for Otago. AUCKLAND, June 16. Not Communists. Intelligence has been received that twenty, one passengers by the Marion, from New Caledonia, for Auckland, via Huon Island, are not Communists, but workmen engaged to collect guano at Huon Island. Valuable Importation. The ship Samendal, from London, brings six splendid shorthorn bulls from the Birmingham Show and the sales of March for the Waikato Land Association. They were brought by Mr Thomas Bußsell for the Association. Harrowing the Harbour. The Harbor Board has employed the Bteamer Annie Milbank to work the harrows borrowed from the Danedin Board. The experiment proved a failure, as the harrows only disturbed the mud, which settled down hard, the current not being strong enough to carry it away. Found Bead. An elderly man, named J. Hill, was found dead early this morning by a milkman in Karangahape road. Hill was sixty years of age, and arrived in Auckland in October, 1873, by the ship Ganges. At the inquest, the jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased died through exposure and continual intemperance. The Bench on Cock Fighting. James Ferguson and James Pollock were fined 5s and costs for aiding and abetting cock-fighting. The Bench declined to express an opinion as to whether cock-fighting should bo approved or reprobated. WELLINGTON. June 16. The Scarcity of Work. A letter from the Minister for Public Works, in reply to one from the Mayor asking what steps the Government intend to take in view of the fact that a number of men at present engaged by the Corporation will be shortly thrown out of work owing to the close of the works, states that the Government are not losing sight of the necessity for providing employment as far as the means afforded by Parliament will permit. The Minister trustß that the Corporation, on that account, would not fail to push forward such works as may be calculated to aflord relief. OAMABU, June 16. Body of a Child Found. The body of a child, evidently aged about a week, was found under the bridge on the North road to-day. The police have the matter in hand. The Waitaki Election. There was great excitement over the election to-day. The following are the total numbers polled by the candidates : Jones, 775 ; Beid, 666; Boberts, 168. There were 31 informal votes. DUNEDIN, June 16. Benevolent Carnival. The takings at the Benevolent Carnival yesterday were £130—£36 7s at the doors, and £BS 12a at stalls. INVEaCABGILL, June 16. AppointmentMr Gurr, of Featherston, Wellington, has been appointed head master of the District High School. The Beer Tax. The Southland brewers have agreed to bear a share of the beer tax. They will pay the Excise duty direct, recovering from the publicans a proportion by charging 2s additional per hogshead.
