INTRODUCTION OF TROUT INTO CANTERBURY.
TO THE EDITOR OF THB FBESS. SlB, —My friend Mr A. M. Johnson has thought fit to address you re introduction of ' trout into Canterbury. Outside a defective memory my friend enjoys a marked peculiarity in dealing with facts and figures. Permit me to supply an important omission in his letter ' with respect to his trip to Tasmania. Ettraot from Report of Canterbury Acclimatisation Society for year ending April 30th, 1868 : ' "The Oouncil agreed to advance him (Mr. ' Johnson) £3O. to continue the payment of his ' salary as heretofore, and to provide—at the Society's expense —a man to watch and work in the gardens during his absence." It was ' likewise agree* that " a bonus of £1 be given him for every fish he reared to six weeks old." Under these terms Mr Johnson, in August, I 1867, proceeded to Tasmania, took charge of the ova presented by the Tasmanian B.oyal Society to Canterbury, returned in S9ptember, 1867, to Canterbury, and out of 800 ova was ; instrumental in hatching out the large number < of three trout, for whioh ho received tho handsome sum of £3 sterling, as per agreement. As I should be exceedingly sorry to impair by ■ any ac j of mine the great intimacy which has hitherto existed between my friend Mr Johnson and myself, I may, I trust, be excused for declining to pursue this matter further. Yours, &\, 8. O. Fabb, Sec. Canterbury Acclimatisation Society.
