THE REMOVAL OF THE RAILWAY COMMISSIONER'S STAFF.

The following letter has been forwarded by the town clerk to the Government on the above subject: The Hon. the Minister for Public Works. Sir, —I have the honor, by direction of the Council, to say that it is reported that the Government are about to remove the Cashier’s Department at the railway here to Dunedin,

and to express its strong sense of the great injustice, if the rumour be correct, that would be inflj .tad upon tbe eity if such a course were insisted upon. Public opinion here has been strongly expressed at the repotted action the Government is taking in tke matter. As the offices occupied by iha Commissioner of Hail wavs at Dunedin have b’sn nearly destroyed with its valuabl i papers, the Council would respectfully urge upon the Government thattha staff already removed to Dunedin should reoccupy the offices here, which were specially built for the said staff, and which would be the means of saving the colony a large expenditure. The Conned, on behalf of the citizens, would respectfully suggest that an opportunity of withdrawiug from the injustice inflicted on one part of the colony for the benefit of another, is fortunately opened to the Government, if the coarse is followed as indicated, and whieh would tend to allay the very strong feeling existing against the Government. There is no doubt that after the promise made by the Government not to remove the staff, it would cause considerable surprise and disappointment to find that it has not been kept. The Council would respectfully request the positive assurance from the Government that it is not their intention to remove the staff to Dunedin. I have the honor to be, sir. Tour obedient servant, P. T. Haskins, „ Town Clerk. May 19th, 18S0.
