Brassey, President of the Board of Trade, with a view of urging the facilities of Auckland as a coaling station and depot for the South Pacific, and also to forward Dr. Hector’s report on the coal deposits of the North. NAPIER, May 19. Gold Reefs in Napier.
Thompson Brothers have discovered goldbearing reefs in the Tarawera county, twenty miles north-west of Napier. They have secured a protection order from the Government over tho claim of 400 by 200 yards. WELLINGTON, May 19. Divorce Cases. At the Divorce Court this morning a decree absolute was made in the following cases:— Cooper v. -Cooper, Wellington ; Reynolds v. Reynolds and Wilson ; and Joynt v. Joynt. AUCKLAND, May 18. A Short-sighted ThiefThe Pokeno railway station wa< broken into last night. The station master left the key in the safe, and £lO were stolen. A considerable sum of money left on a chair was untouched. WELLINGTON, May 18. The Accident to the ManawatnThe charges against the captain, purser, and agent of the Manawatn came on for hearing to-day, but owing to the absence of the steamer from Wellington, they wore adjourned until May 25th. OAMARU, May 18. The Waitaki ElectionThe candidates for the Waitaki election now are Messrs John Reid, W. H. 8. Roberts, and George Jones. Mr Sutherland has retired in favor of Mr Reid. DUNEDIN, May 18, Mr Webb’s Disappearance. It is stated on reliable authority that the Permanent Building Society will suffer no . loss through the sudden departure of Mr J. S. Webb, the manager. Attempted SuicideA woman named Agnes Hurst, wife of a carpenter, was admitted to the hospital yesterday afternoon. She was suffering from the effects of poison, having taken about three-fourths of a packet of Battle’s vermin killer with some moat a few minutes before. Emetics were at once applied, and she was soon pronounced out of danger. Hurst states that his wife had been in a desponding state for tho past few days. The parties were married in February lust, and it is stated that they had not lived happily. RetirementMr W. O. Roberts has retired from the service of the Bank of New Zealand. Mr Gibson Ferrier will continue in charge of the Dunedin branch. pFBOir OtTB OWN COBBKSPONDBNT.] WELLINGTON, May 18. The Premier. The Premier left by the Wakatipu this afternoon. Ho returns to Wellington on Saturday night. The Parihaka Meeting. The Government have received very satisfactory telegrams to-day regarding the Parihaka meeting which took place yesterday. There was a very large attendance at the meeting, and Te Whiti spoke at some length. He denied having said at a former meeting that the roads would never meet, and declared that what ho really said was that the roads should “have no end.” He continued to preach peace and forbid resistance or interference on the part of tho Natives with the Constabulary or road making or surveys, and reiterated his assurance that no more trouble
(war) should come on the land, and that no more “ water ” (blood) should be spilt. The result is looked on as entirely satisfactory and favorable to the maintenance of peace.
