LATE CABLE NEWS.
PBt Telegraph.! BUSSELL, May 11. Tho following cablegrams appear in the Sydney papers brought bv the Ta Anau : LONDON, May 4. The “Daily Telegraph,” referring to the Russian marine in the Pacific, and the possible consequent danger to the Australian colonies, suggests that a strong British squadron should be stationed there, tho colonies paying a port.on of the cost. The “ Pall Mall Gazette ” is under the impression that the late wars have eradicated the opinion that England is careless of her connection with her colonies, and that now all are unanimous in appreciating the fact that during the recent depression tho colonial trade compensated England for the losses incurred. May 3._ The “Gazette” believes that the recent application to the Hume Government for advice on tho Victorian Council affairs, indicates the removal of the old jealousy of the Colonial Office, and thinks that the present is a favorable time when the discussion of the commercial treaties between Foreign Powers would impress upon the colonies favoring protection the advantage of understanding the subject of tariffs. Sir Garnet Wolseloy will shortly proceed to India, and succeed General Sir Predk. Haims.
