SUPREME COURT.

A very peculiar case came before the Supreme Court in banco yesterday which illustrated forcibly what may happen to a man in Canterbury. Tho case was an appeal from the deck-ion of the Resident Magistrate at Ashburton. It appeared from the case on appeal that tho appellant had gone to tho house of the respondent at night and knocked at the door, asking at tho same time if the house was not " Tho Leanto," evidently an establishment of local celebrity. Being told that it was not, he declined to leave, or at any rate continued to knock. Ultimately he left the premises, and was in the act of getting into his cart on the public road when he was arrested. He was brought before the Eesidant Magistrate on a charge of being illegally on. the premises and sentenced to three months' imprisonment. A case was stated on appeal, and His Honor said that the case was one of the most peculiar he had heard, and quashed the conviction. Tho other cases in haneo were disposed of, several being postponed.
