MELBOURNE, April 20. Sugar. Sugars continue strong, and a brisk enquiry is expected. 2000 pockets, which were advertised for sale, have been withdrawn. The Freezing Co. and the Stock Tax. The directors of the Freezing Company waited upon the Commissioner of Customs, urging upon him the abolition of the stock tax, and declaring that it would bo quite impossible otherwise to establish the frozen meat industry. The Commissioner said that he could not hope at present to act in compliance with their request. SYDNEY, April 20. Shipping. The Arawata arrived from New Zealand yesterday. Mutual Provident Society. A delegate, holding a tbousand Melbourne proxies, lias arrived hero to oppose the abolition of proxy voting, which will bo proposed at the Mutual Provident Society's meeting to-morrow. The ExhibitionThe International Exhibition, which ha» been open for seven months, was formally closed to-day by tho governor, Lord Augustus Loftus, in accordance with tho programmo which was issued, and in the presence of a largo number of people. Tho Executive Commissioners' address to his Excellency, which vvas read at the closing ceremony, stated that the exhibits had numbered lt,ooo, to which 7070 awards had been given, including 2753 first class and 2052 second. The admissions during the seven months had reached a total of 1,022,000. The receipts had been under £50,000, but it was to be hoped that that sum would pay working expenses. NEWCASTLE, April 20. The Coal Masters and their Men The coal masters offer os Od for hewing, and when coal is at 10s a rise or fall of 2d or 3d in the shilling on tho selling price. The Minors' Lodges consented to consider the offer, but it is unlikely they will agree to accept it. BRISBANE, April 20. A New Cable. It is understood that the Government has rocoivod an offer from an English company to land a cable from Ceylon to Point Parker in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
