FOOTBALL

Play began Bhortly after three, and continued, with the exception of a short spell, until 5 p.m. The blues winning the toss selected the northern goal. On the ball being started, the blues kept the rods well in hand. After several well contested scrimmages, in which the blues had rather the best of it, Alabaster (blue) had a chanco and succeeded in obtaining a touch-down; the try, however, resulting in a failure. Shortly after thiD, Beswick (blue), by a pretty piece of play, scored a goal with a well directed drop kick from the outside of a loose scrimmage. Some smart runs were made, both sides seemingly pretty well matched. On the ball being forced near reds' goal again Evans (blue) managed to secure another touch-down. The try, however, was not successful. In the second spell and after having changed goals, both sides warmed to the work, the reds working well. Field (red), by his good forward play, secured their first touch-down. The try waß entrusted to Sheath, who successfully solved the difficulty. On time being called, the blues were half a point ahead of their opponents. The Eastern Football Club opened their season on Saturday with a match between a picked fifteen and the rest of the club.
