EASTER SERVICES.
Yesterday being Easter Day, special services were held in the various Anglican churches of the city, at each of which there were crowded congregations. At St. Luke’s there was full choral celebration of communion at '8.30 a.m. The Eyrie and Sanctus were sung to a new setting for quartette of male voices, composed by N. Q. Barnett ; the Credo, according to Merbecke, Gloria in Excolsis, to plain song ; Processional Hymn, No. 134; recessional “Nunc Dimittis.” At 11 a.m. there was full choral service, the sermon being preached by Rev. E. A. Lingard. At 3 p.m. there was a children’s service, with sermon, and in the evening full choral evensong. The list of music for the services comprised Processional Hymn, 134; Easter Hymn to Humphrey’s grand chant; Te Deum and Benedictus, arranged by Mr N. G. Barnett; Eyrie Eleison, Barnett, in D ; Credo (Merbecke), evening canticles, by Dr. Barnett, in F ; anthem, “ Why Seek ye the Living,” E. J. Hopkins ; “ The Wages of Sin is Death,” by Mr N. G. Barnett. During the collection in the evening, the aria “ But Thou didst not Leave,” with the preceding recitative from “ The Messiah,” was sung. At St. John’s there was full choral celebration of the communion, and choral matins and evensong. The music for the services comprised, rieeea and responses, Tallis; festival anthem, “ Since by man,” “ The trumpet shall sound,” “But. thou didst not leave,” and the “Hallelujah Chorus.”
