CRIME STATISTICS.

The police record of convictions obtained against persons at the Lyttelton Resident Magistrate’s Court during last year shows a total of 315 for all offences, against 344 during 1878, or a decrease during 1879 of 29 upon the total for the previous year. For drunkenness and drunk and disorderly the total convictions last year were 97, a decrease of 85 on the number for the year before. For offences under the Merchant Shipping Act the convictions were respectively for the years named as under :—Desertion, 1878, 17; 1879, 20; absent without leave, the totals were 25 and 26 ; embezzlement of cargo, 1 and 8 ; refusal of duty, 33 and 30 ; smuggling, 1 in 1879 ; stowaways, 11 and 4; assaulting officers, 8 aud 9 ; assisting seamen to desert, 2in 1878. Under the Vagrant Act there were none in 1878, against 11 last year ; common assault, none in 1878, last year, 7; assaults on police, 1 and 5 ; breaches of Police Ordinance, 8 and 14; illegally on premises, 6 and 5 ; simple larceny, 16 and 13; larceny from the person, 4in 1879 ; larceny in dwellings, 2 and 4 ; lunacy, 12 in 1878, same in 1879 ; forgery, 1 in 1879 ; obtaining goods by false pretences, 5 in 1879 ; unmentionable offence, 1 and 1; using obscene language, 4 in 1878 ; wounding with intent, 3 in 1878 ; wilful damage to property, 4 and 8 ; breach of railway by-laws, none in 1878, 4 last year.
