SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary masting of the obove Council, adjourned from Monday last, was held yesterday evening at the usual hour. There ■were present —Eis Worship the Mayor, Ors. White, Langdown, Andrew, Eicholl, Charters, Joyce, Pavitt, Shieriaw, and Hall. The dork read the correspondence that had taken place since last meeting. Among the letters received were the following :—The town clerk of Christchurch wrote enclosing a copy of a resolution which had been passed on the prevention of Sunday trading, and asking for an expression of opinion thereon from the Sydenham Borongh Council. On the motion of Cr. Joyce, the following resolution was passed—“ That the City Council bo written in reply, calling their attention to the fact that the matter of Sunday trading is already provided for by an Act of the Imperial Parliament.” A letter was read from the town clerk of Christchurch, expressing the Council’s inability at present to re'open the question of putting the South town belt in repair. A letter was received from the Chairman of the Riecartou Road Board, stating that the Bcc-rd unanimously considered that the claim made against them by the Sydenham Borough Council for the sum of £421 5s Id, as the balance duo to the Council on account of the boundary road, was an unjust one, and in the event of their not being satisfied with this decision, they were referred to the Road Beard’s solicitors, Messrs Harper, Harper and Scott. The writer also stated that the Road Board would meet on Monday, April 12th, at 3 p. m., and would be happy to discuss the matter with the works committee of the Council. After some discussion, it was resolved that the letter bo received, and that the matter be referred to the vvorka committee, with power to meet the Board and act. The secretary to the Christchurch District Drainage Board wrote, forwarding a copy of the proposed amended Drainage Bill intended to be brought before Parliament during its next session. Received. Letters were read from Mr E. O. J. Stevens and Mr Richardson, acknowledging the receipt of Council’s correspondence on the subject of the retention in Christchurch of certain of the Railway Departments. Ordered to bo received. A letter was received from the Secretary to the Treasury in Wellington, stating that the sum of £2 15s had been remitted to tho credit or the Borough Fund Account on account of fees, fines, and penalties collected in tho Christchurch Resident Magistrate's Court during the month of January last. A letter was received from certain residents in tho street running parallel with the north boundary of Mollott’s paddock, requesting that the said street might bo formed in accordance with the Municipal Corporations Act. Referred to the Works Committee. A circular letter was read from the under secretary at Wellington, enclosing copies of the BIU proposed to be introduced at the next Session of Parliament providing the management of hospitals and charitable institutions, and inviting suggestions from the Borough Council after they had considered it. It was resolved to consider the letter on a future occasion.

The committee gave ft statement containing a list of the work required to be done in respect to roads, commencing with the Gasworks road; and with regard to the cost of formation of the streets in Sandridge, the committee could not advise the Council to mslie any reduction ia the rate. The report was adopted. The sanitary committee in their report recommended that the license of Mr Bull’s slaughterhouse should be renewed, on the ■understanding that the licensee should agree to tho terms considered advisable by the

Jouncil. 'JCho report was agreed to. IThe report of the finance committee was to the effect that tho receipts for the fortnight amounted to £2ll 4s lOi ; accounts passed for payment, £9l 4s 9d; leaving a credit balance at the Bank on March 5Lh of £1443 3e sd.

A deputation of Sandridge residents waited on the Council in reference to the charge for works in that locality, and their representations wore duly considered. On the motion of Or. Hall, it was resolved that on the payment within a month of the Council’s claim for formation, it be an instruction to the work committee to deal leniently with the ratepayers of Sandridge as to the cost of shingling. A deputation of residents in a private street off Colombo road, waited on the Council in reference to the formation of the street in question, and the matter was, after some discussion, referred to the works’ committee, with power to act. The Mayor stated that ho had, in accordance with instructions from the Council, seen the representatives of Christchurch in relation to an interview for the discussion of matters of interest to the borough, and they had expressed their willingness to meet the Council at any time they might appoint. Or. Andrew moved —“ That, in consequence of the inaction of the joint committees re the loan, to meet and report as requested by resolution of this Council at its last meeting, his Worship the Mayor be requested to call the committee together, and bring up a report at next meeting,” Seconded by Or. Charters, and earned. After the transaction of some routine business, the Council went into committee and on resuming adjourned.
