The monthly meeting of the members was held on Thursday, Maroh 11th, in the Club Chambers, Cookson street. Mr T. Pashby occupied the ohair. The chairman- stated that the Minister for Public Works had promised to have the landing place for cattle made at the railway station, and to have the Sneyd Arms crossing altered. He then introduced Mr Bateman, who read a paper on " The evil results of Protection," treating the subject under the following heads :—(1) How protection affects the persons whoße trades or manufactures were sought to be fostered by State aid; (2) How it affected the employers ; (3) How it affected consumers whose trades were not fostered; (4) Its influence on capital; (5) How it affected producers not proteoted; (6) The way in which it retarded the development of natural results arising out of the produoing power of countries; (7) The generally destructive outcome of protection. At the close, a vote of thanks was unanimously passed to Mr Bateman, but owing to the lateness of the hour no discussion took place. It was resolved that the annual grain, foal, and root show be held at an early date, and a special meeting held on Wednesday, at 7.30, to fix the date and appoint a committee of management. The club then adjourned.
